Why These Millennial Brides Say A Wedding Isn't Worth The Money
The wedding industry often sells couples a fantasy: This is the best, happiest or most important day of your life. It’s how some couples justify spending tens of thousands of dollars on one day. But millennials and Gen Z are increasingly questioning whether a traditional wedding is worth the money.

I had a budget of $35k for my wedding. But, my wedding costed me $2500 in total… had only important key people (40 max) attend. We used the rest of the money for down payment on our first home. This was 15 years ago. Now we are financially more secure than everyone in my family (including in-laws) with a home equity close to 7 figures. I'm glad i invested in a home rather than a one day party. Best decision of my life (besides marrying the wife, of course).
For people who have 30k for a big party.
A real man will pay for the wedding of your dreams.
Being a Millenial bride, I tell you the reasonS why a wedding isn't worth the money: 1- I'm almost 30, I need every cent I can get in order to afford a house someday. 2- I don't even know enough people to justify renting a venue and paying for catering.
Shout out to my mom and dad! Eloping in the nineties before it was cool. Thank you for a beautiful example.😊
thats happens when you and not your parents pay for it
I don't even know a hundred people I like enough to invite to a wedding.
i found this video to be really helpful (mistakes you can avoid when budgeting for a wedding) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYCCmPwOgWM
For me in order of cost:
Most – Wedding Rings (Forever)
Mid – Honeymoon (2 weeks)
Least – Wedding (1 day)
There were a few things i wish I'd spent more money and time on with my wedding— photography, my dress (borrowed a dress), and actually making sure i got to do dancing & cutting the cake. There was no one to help us shift things. It was just a lame endless line of people.
Fancy evaporates quickly. Always. Relationships can last a lifetime.
Weddings have gotten WAAAAY out of hand.
2:21 this chart is pure fake news and propaganda. $1 in 1980 is $3.75 today. So, the avg salary of $12k in 1980 would be $45k today. That's spot on. In fact the avg salary is $56k. So we are in line with inflation exactly. fake news.
She made a $4000 profit on her wedding? Wow? I never heard any of my group of friends who made money on their wedding. One bride I know who lives out of state received only $24 from a 100 guest wedding. Yes $24. No exaggeration. no one approved of wedding yet they came for free food. Everyone else I know didn’t even make half of what they spent back.
People are dumb af.
Im so glad im starting to realize the high cost of weddings aren’t worth it for me and my partner. I just want to focus on my partner and I combining our lives! Something small and intimate. We have to choose between a house and a wedding and we are choosing a house 🎉
I'm going to have a house/tiny backyard wedding after 7 years with my man! Finally! He budgeted 1100 by Aug 31st and of course as soon as i announced it to my family, they are offering help which I am stubborn to recieve and not everyone has ANY good family at all… my guest list is 8! These 8 people are the only ones who make me feel loved so. It is what it is, I'm so ready, we are going to get a grocery store cake and probably grocery store catering, I'm really just gonna put my heart into flipping the house upside down to clean, and yes, I'm gonna get the curtains for the walls. 😂 yes im gonna decorate but its gonna be within my limits and my OWN WANTS and capabilities
My wedding was just a court wedding & then went to a restaurant afterwards. It was the most important day of my life because my mom in law was there. Only a few months after I was married, she died. My wedding wasn't the most extravagant ever, but it was the most important day of my life because my mom in law was there. I will never forget that day. Thank you for being there. We really appreciate it, & we absolutely miss you. RIP.
$4000 in profit in crazy
Just get married. Keep it simple. If you need all that attention, put the money towards therapy.
Weddings are for your guests but yet u expect them to pay u a gift to attend
But what’s the median cost of weddings? That’s a more accurate representation. The average cost is likely skewed higher for a relatively small number of top cost weddings.
My daughter and her intended have already let me know that they don't want a big wedding. They are planning the courthouse; she wants "a nice dress that I can wear for other things" and have a guest list of exactly 8. Plan "a picnic in the park or dinner somewhere afterward, and put whatever money we would have spent on a wedding toward a bigger downpayment on house or a nice honeymoon." Long before the guy was in the picture, we talked about the importance of spending time and effort preparing for your married life rather than for a one day party.
Spent about 120k on my wedding coming up on 4/9. It’s a destination wedding in Italy and I paid for lodging and food for all my guests so it was quite a bit but I hope it goes well.
I got married in a church. Roses were bought from a wholesaler – 10 dozen for $100. At the reception we served finger sandwiches, punch, and cake, etc. There's no reason to feed everyone a big, sit down meal. We were poor as church mice, so we made do. If I ever get married again, I will pick out my dress alone, have the wedding in a lovely chapel, with a small, luxurious dinner for our immediate family (parents) with perhaps a BBQ at a later date for friends and family, just something for fun. The first wedding was super crowded (400 people) and I don't know how many hundreds of sandwiches, and all. I would recommend keeping it really small and do it just the way you want. Wedding cakes are the biggest rip off. The layers are frozen, the frosting comes in giant tubs, save yourself. Really. Costco makes great cakes. Publix makes amazing cakes as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBHc8f2DI5Q
Most guests dont want to be there
My wedding was a stressful day for me. It was like pleasing others. We did not know most people there. Example) SIblings invited their friends amd so on. If I ever remarry again, it will be in the court house amd cruise ship for both of us.
Honestly, I don't know that many people. I know couples tend to invite extended family but I have absolutely no desire to do that. I might see my extended relatives once every decade but they are practically strangers to me. I'd much rather surround myself with my immediate family and friends to enjoy my special day. I'd love a wedding that is down to earth without all the stress around it. $28k is way too much money to spend on one day. Like a lot of these women said, I'd much rather put that money to invest in our future.
Why get married at all?!? Divorces are way more expensive!!
I met the love of my life and we are engaged now but we have a big problem…
He wants to marry me, but he doesnt want to spend money on the wedding…
He said "most i would spend are 4000€, end of story."
And… i dont know… that seems a bit low for about 40 people with food, drinks, music and a location… (dress and everything has to be in these 4000€ too..)
After i told him that he can count 100€ per guest for food and drinks alone we was done.
"Well then we have to kick some people out of the wedding."
Our family has only 11 people left (him and me included), after that i have 3 really good friends and their partner. My godmother and her husband. So we are up to 19.
His friends are like 18 people…
He would take the cheapest location, cheap food and dont even start for the clothes or the rings… i told him that if he doesnt want to be a part of that day… he doesnt have to.
I would go partying with my friends and my family and he can sit at home.
But thats nothing he wants either…
I dont really know what to do…
I already said "if you dont wanna spend money on the wedding, we dont need to get married. It's even easier if we break up. You take just your stuff and i take mine. No point in getting married."
A friend of mine said thatthe guy she maarried didnt want the big wedding, but he purchased 12 Fender guitars in 4years!! And that was just a hobby!!! No he isnt a professional musician!!!! She said she could have had her dream wedding!!!! So she said she dont want to marry him now!!! She says now she is better off by herself!!!!!
Marriage is an institutional Man-Trap, bound by a legal contract, enforced by a biased judicial system which focuses on the deplitsion of mens rights.
If i would have gottened married at the courthouse then we never would have gottened married!! I cared more about the wedding than the marriage anyway!!! The marriage isntgoing tolast anyway!!!
dress
put money on house
a 70th wedding anniversary makes more sense than wedding and honeymoon
Even in country like india $ 20,000 is most basic that you spend
Had a court wedding in September with 10 people, had a great lunch after and planned a big destination wedding next year July …. Send out the save the date to everyone in august and then Changed the plans – 2 weeks ago 😂 I didn’t want to go through the whole stress BS and we really did not feel like spending all that money just for 1 day so we decided to go on a luxurious honeymoon and put a down payment on a holiday house in Jamaica instead of giving a party.. while some family members are upset ( and we really don’t care) we are FREAKING HAPPY about our decision 🥳❤️🙌🏽
The so called “wedding tax” is not a conspiracy. There is a rumor that telling potential vendors that they’re coming to a “party” rather than a wedding is just going to cause stress and regret (assuming Ng that you care about the photos). If you don’t want to book a full day wedding photographer who would also do tons of prep, and you’d instead like a general photographer who’ll snap photos of your guests for a few hours during the reception and has not been to your venue before, you can just be honest about what the job is and they’ll treat you fairly. In fact, many will appreciate the opportunity to gain expertise doing weddings. What you can’t do is try to pay for an ordinary 3 hours photographer package and then expect that they’ll be there for 7 hours photographing your entire event, will know the venue, will have the expertise to capture the exact correct moments, will know what shots are important to you etc.
People who don’t want to pay for a traditional wedding just shouldn’t have one. It is a lot of money, and typically only more affluent people do it.
I’m glad to see people are waking up to how ridiculous Western Weddings are today. I also found it funny that the content creator kept referring to the “couple” rather than the Bride. If you ever run across a man that pays cent for a wedding l, he’s a fool😂.
