I’m just now getting started. Luckily we got a really nice venue for really cheap at a country club my parents are members at. I’m glad I found this video because I was getting so overwhelmed. We are paying for this whole wedding ourselves. But I have an aunt that just gave her daughter a super high end wedding and told my mom 100k would get us a “small” wedding. And our budget is deff way below that. When I told my mom our guest list was almost 200 people (my fiance has a huge family) my mom said “what?! That would cost you 200,00!”.

I REALLY need some voices of reason during this time. Because the aunties and moms are really in my ear with some wild statements about money!

Did my invitation on canva, printed them myself, made them a bit pretty, most I could deliver myself and just a handful needed to be posted. Cost was around 30€ for 50 guests. Asked for rsvp through what’s app 🤗 nobody cared and in the end they will end up in the trash anyway.

Love your videos, but it’s very strange to me that you (USA) might have weddings with only beer and wine or even without food 🫣.
Have never heard of something like that before. Food and drinks is very high up my priority list
Regards from northern Germany 🤗

I wanted to know what percent of couples have a cake and how much they pay.

Our entire wedding budget is 10k. this may seem like a lot but it’s not. we cut out a lot of things and people don’t understand why. it’s because we are the ones mainly paying for it. Weddings are ridiculously expensive, like even the smallest details are expensive.

This is amazing! Would love it compiled in a downloadable report somewhere. Do you have that?

Jamie love your stuff so much but can you please dial in your sound, and by that I mean dial it up? It's so hard to hear you! Also more podcast episodes from YouTube please and thank you!

Hearing this is wild cuz our budget:
$0 invitations (email and website)
$0 transportation
$300 flowers (Silk)
$10/centerpiece
$1500 venue
$100/guest food budgeted

Postable for invites. It was painless and perfect!

Wow, this is the video I needed. So assuring to have a sense of what average people are finding for these costs. Thanks so much, planners rarely take the time to do this. Can you make this a series where you poll folks from various major cities? That’d be cool!

$31/pp for catering is a great cost based on what I’ve seen! I’ve been to a couple venues with a decent price but forced in-house catering for a minimum of $70/pp (which is insanity to me).

I’m having my wedding on a Thursday next summer, and we’re saving a lot of money on our venue. Saturdays are 10,000 but we’re only paying 3,800

@Jamie, this "there's going to be a 1million-dollar weeding in there that is going to toss all the numbers out". That's why these type of statistics should be run not to find out the average, but the median. The numbers that come in more frequently gain more weight than the outliers. Still great info!! =D

I would love a video on E-vites and using websites, maybe even making one just for your wedding! I think that would be really savvy and interesting:)

Re: alcohol budget: I'm in Portland and I'm discovering that our bartender budgets are way higher than your estimates, which I suspect is due to our more rigorous liquor regulations. We are doing beer/wine only for 80 ppl, 4 hours of service, disposables, no soda/water service, and the SERVICE cost (we buy alcohol separately) is $2250!! With booze it's going to be like $35/head!!!

@sakuranzu 3 October 2024 - 12:08 pm

Are we counting taxes and tips in these numbers?

HEY !! so i need some help so me and my fiancé started planning and i feel like im drowning and discouraged I want to give her the big day she wants. I have about 10,000. for the guest count we have its about 80 people if everyone comes okay the package it 2,700 for ceremony location reception and a weather backup room. then there's a food and beverage minimum of 3,500 and then there's a deposit of 2,000 but ive ben saving for the deposit so that won't come out of the budget of 10,000 so ill have like 3,800 is that enough for everything ells 😔😔 I don't know

So grateful for this video and the hope it brings. Jamie, I am so impressed with you talking about the importance of knowing which statistics are being reported (mean, median, mode), how statistics can be skewed, and why the stats we see tend to lead us to believe we are alone in our budget boat. Thank you for taking the poll and sharing the statistics with all of us. It was encouraging and helpful.

I understand why so few people paid a calligrapher for invites. I think people might order printed invites so they have a keepsake. I think the number of small, private weddings due to COVId impacted this. I haven’t been to a wedding in years. My nieces got married in a small venue, immediate family and best friends only. Fever than 20 guests, but got nice dresses, hair done, etc. had professional flowers and photographer and live streamed. They provided meals and entertainment for the guests. Due to the size each of these weddings cost less than $5000.

8:21 is it supposed to be 7%: $4,600+ for the florals?

I`m dyi-ing my flowers with origamis. They look amazing and a block of 500 sheets costs only 10 euros! (of course that costs time but if you have it, that`s awesome!)

I'm a professional Wedding planner and floral designer. In my last wedding, even though the bride fully knew, that I was a professional, had her "artsy/craftsy" highly unskilled , "friend from church", with no prior floral design experience or training in the arts, create ALL of the floral bouquets and table arrangements….I was horrified. She also totally skimped on the buffet, choosing baked chicken and rice and beans and baked ziti for her entries. The overall effect was (in my opinion) "lowbrow". I managed to salvage the event by hiring a super-pro DJ… who just bought "it" to the ugly and cheap VFW HALL venue chosen by the brides mother!

Nowadays you can find some Awsome wedding invitations on sites like Etsy. Some you can print off, some you put in the box the details you want then they are sent to you for you to send out to all the guests. I was looking the other day at invitations for something that take my fancy & found some beautiful ones I loved on Etsy that I’d buy.

I always find these videos to be so hard to watch; as a Canadian looking in at how little you Americans pay, it's hard to imagine being able to throw a wedding — even a budget wedding — for these kinds of numbers.

today I learned that professional calligraphers can do custom wedding invitations apparently! this isn't to say that I WILL hire one, but I'm wondering if people are even aware that this is an option and maybe that's why so few people hire them?

I wanted to stick my budget around 12-15k. The problem was that everywhere around here for venues and catering were ranging $50 a head. Which maybe could be fine if my fiancé and I didn't have such large families (my dad alone has 7 siblings, his dad I think is the youngest out of 9). The first venue we found that we truly loved and was reasonable with the food and pop bar was $23 a head. That was awesome. Whoever was able to do it under 10k, BLESS YOU MY CHILD!

Unfortunately this is not applicable for African weddings 😓. We have to have two weddings (an African traditional wedding and the regular white wedding), and the mothers invite almost every single person who has ever spoken to you in your life, so minimum 400+ people. And most Africans love luxury anything, so trying to attempt a DIY or non glam inspired wedding is a bust 🤷🏾‍♀️

cynical take: wedding websites inflate those average costs, either through outright falsification or accepting fake budgets (submitted by self-interested vendors, perhaps), to convince users that it's impossible to do a wedding under 30K. weddingwire/theknot won't make any referral/advertising/partner income if people go the DIY route…
