Where are the guests? Trying to figure out how to do a first look in a scenic spot without having guests see. How far in advance of the ceremony was the first look?

I have only done 1 first look, and the couple was so awkward . The couple looked at each other and then looked at me for direction.

You take amazing photos! But doesn’t it take over with two or three photographers? Can’t it be just a photo session with models instead of a wedding ?

OMG Katelyn… I love how you let it happen… I am a videographer myself and I have worked with a few photographers that either interrupt the first look or they stage the entire thing. I rather get the raw emotions… Especially being a videographer. Great video!

Thank you for this nice video! I am a Belgian amateur photographer. Inspired by you, I bought the R6. I am wondering, for those photos, with the 85mm 1.2, what’s the “safe” aperture?

With the lighting, and "good light" what you are informing people is not correct. You can make your own light with off camera strobes, if you have powerful ones you can over power the sun and not end up with blown out skys, if in the shade, you can get away with smaller speed lights. Ultimately strobes give you better shots in strong light because you can expose for the background and light the couple. No blown out skies. Now you may not want to use strobes, that is fine, but i do think you should mention this technic as it is used by many photographers.

All great advice here. We too love it when first look is an option. Like you, we call it the 3 levels of first look. 1. Just the couple 2. Couple and wedding party 3. add immediate families..Also, for 16 years we have used headsets to communicate. We say that the headsets have "saved" our marriage! Instead of texting, we use Motorola 1410's..Thank you for all the great work you both do!

Been a wedding photog for 12-13 years and still learned something from this! My takeaways are – verbalize to them take as long as you want then let us know. I say that but don't give clear examples so I end up waiting for them awkwardly to kind of end the first look then swoop. Secondly I like that SHE is gonna verbalize the turn around – I like that more! After first look, I always have the couple add their wedding bands because these are their wedding photos. (I bring them out with me) I'm always torn on bouquet or no bouquet, if it's not huge, I usually just say bouquet is fine!

Added tip from someone who also is a videographer: be mindful of where your videographer is. More times than not they aren’t able to move as freely as a photographer and this isn’t a part of a day you can recreate.

Oh look…. The flowers are in her hand.. Something so many "Wedding Planners" claim is a "bad idea"… because they supposedly "get in the way of the couple embracing".. without ever asking me, the experienced photographer, capturing the moment.. 🙂 I often suggest that the MOH tags along to take the flowers from the Bride, if needed.. Great video..!
