I did something similar with the solar lights..One time I used the lights for Halloween I painted the light itself orange that gave off a mystic look for the trick or treaters walking up..and for Christmas I painted them blue, white, red alternating nice vid thanks!!

I've had some of those solar lights. They are ok for the first few weeks or months but the power switch isnt protected from the weather and water will get into the switch. The battery won't last long and you will have to change the battery inside after 6 – 8 months. Plus you will only get 1hour to 2 hours of light from them in December.
I've bought much more expensive solar lights that are still going strong almost a year later and they stay light up a while lot longer.
I purchased these dollar store lights two yrs ago and they are still working perfectly

I have two bulbs that are solar activated which I bought years ago for a few cents and they still light up at night
These last all year for me
problem with putting the lights insidethe lantern is you will get less light to hit the solar panel and they wont last lit as long compare to having facing the sun directly
