I've been married twice. (Both of them over 20 years ago. Both with a guest list of about 80 ppl.) First time around my parents paid the majority of the costs with the groom & myself paying for some parts of it (making a total difficult to know). I'm guessing that one cost around $30K – in 1996. My 2nd wedding (only a few years later, as my first husband turned out to be physically abusive) – was paid for by the groom & myself. We spent less than $2500. The 2nd wedding was far more fun for all concerned & the marriage also lasted a Lot longer.

It's important to remember that the expense of your wedding bears Zero relationship to the quality of your Marriage. In fact, not starting out your married life in debt is probably the single BEST thing you can do for yourselves, with respect to your wedding planning. Do what you can actually AFFORD without going into debt or stressing yourselves financially. Your MARRIAGE will profit from your prudence!

For my 2nd wedding, we rented a group camp site in Samuel P Taylor Park – in Marin county, in the Redwoods – where we could have the space for the entire day for the cost of only $100. We had our ceremony in a beautiful Redwood Grove, directly adjoining the group picnic site.

We converted the BBQs in the group picnic site to buffet tables (using custom cut plywood & large tablecloths we made ourselves from yardage); we converted the fire pit to a cake table (using a round plywood table topper from Home Depot plus a large circular tablecloth). Because of the casual outdoor setting, our guests were able to dress as casually as they liked, and the children present were able to run around outside making as much noise as they liked during the reception, without disturbing anyone. (This was part of what made this wedding so much fun for everyone.) The bridal party was very formally dressed, but that didn't extend to our guests.

In terms of our budget, we focused on the food – it was important to us to have fabulous food but ALSO *NOT* to cut our guest list. So we chose an inexpensive "informal" – though Gorgeous outdoor setting – although the bridal party still dressed up formally.

For a very reasonable price, we were able to get platters of food from one of our favorite (Middle Eastern) restaurants, which was meant to be served at room temperature, making it perfect for our outdoor "picnic" setting. We had a magnificent feast, with several types meat dishes as well as plenty of vegetarian options, all of which was meant to be eaten by hand (although we provided utensils). We provided plenty of food for everyone, yet we still had so much food left over that we were able to take an entire platter with us for our wedding night (which proved essential since by the time we arrived there was no longer food service available at our destination).

We also had a beautiful 3 tier wedding cake, each layer of which was so tall they barely fit onto the cake stacker. By using a cake stacker, our baker didn't need to build in any structural support into the cake itself, so we saved LOTS of money, by simply purchasing 3 cakes of graduated diameters – which, because they did not contain any internal supports, were simply the usual cost for cakes of those sizes, rather than being the usual (much higher) price for "wedding cake" (which is normally structurally reinforced to take the added weight of the layers being stacked atop one another).

There are Lots of ways to have a Fabulous Celebration without breaking the bank. Get Creative & prioritize what is important to the two of You.

I love the transparency! It’s rare to find couples that are open with their finances when it comes to the wedding, especially down to the T!

My guess was $50k. Love this video and y’all’s attitude on being transparent and open. We know that’s not typical in our culture.
I see Nigerians having this big expensive weddings and I always wonder the true cost and how they were able to afford it. We all don’t come from rich families lol.
I always say after I get married I would make a video similar to this. I will even share how we paid for it because I know it will help someone else out lol.
Thank God for quarantine and all these intimate weddings I been seeing. I’m now inspired for my wedding. I don’t plan on spending over $40k on my wedding. It will be a really nice intimate wedding with just close and family (P.s. this may just be me talking now 🤣)
