absolutely true. I did buy one meter last week but only because taking the extra Drive to a specialized shop wouldn't have saved me the difference in time/costs

That's a good point. My local shop will weld and fabricate shit for pennies, something to do for the apprentice. Cheaper than buying the mig welder on sale over time it is. See what i did there lol

Great advice. Always by steel from steel merchants, here they sell rebar by weight not length and will cut it within reason so you can get it in/on the car to get it home

Those labels look like Mr Bricolage – who are bloody extortionate (but you will find that weird fitting nobody else has). Leroy Merlin for everything else, except screws "en vrac" that are cheap at Castorama – just make sure you carefully organise them to get as much in as you can and still close the bag!

To anyone buying steel in Europe: Mild steel profiles (of all shapes and sizes, regardless if cold or hot rolled) shouldn't cost more than roughly 3-6€/Kg in the most expensive countries. Used to cost half that in 2018/2019 before Covid and inflation hit. The profiles you buy will almost always be the same S235Jr alloy, some might also stock the same profiles in S355J2 but the price difference between the two isn't noticeable unless you're going through several tons a week.

So, if anyone wants to foray into using steel in their projects, buy it directly from steel suppliers, fabrication shops or steel merchants. However, if possible bring a trailer or van as some of these places may require you to purchase a minimum of 50-100€ of steel per purchase if you're not a company customer
