Instead of how long have you been djing maybe “how many weddings have you DJ’d?” Clients don’t care about specific gear unless its some of the specialty things like dancing on a cloud, cold sparks etc…

Great video. I'm thinking instead of how many years have you been dj'ing, how many weddings do you do in a year?

I have a question for you. I'm considering someone who is around 350-400 for 4 hours and ceremony, and MCs. I really like this person so far, and they fit into my budget…is this a really low price? Everywhere else I've asked has been almost a grand. I've looked at their page and they seem pretty legitimate. He's also pretty honest with me about what some DJs might do (tell me they're close to me, then hire someone that is actually close to me and split the cost…meaning the person I've been talking to isnt even the one coming.) Every business can be shady, and I just dont want to get screwed over 🙁 does this seem like a reasonable price? They also have travel fees, so I guess it's not THAT cheap.

Great video! Those are really good questions. I started djing 3 years ago, never having done it prior just jumped head first learned as I went. I was fortunate enough to make a deal with two event halls for exclusivity and worked saturday and Sundays when they had Sunday events. I accumulated more or less 150 events (wedding, quince, 50ths, graduation.. mostly weddings) Anyway, a good question to ask in conjunction to how long they have been djing is to ask how MANY events they've done. I met a DJ that said they had been djing for 20 years, but had only done 12 events in that entire time. I have to specify how many events I've done because 2 or 3 years experience with 150 events is way more substantial than say 20 years and 12 events.

What equipment and light do you use? Not a great question. The average wedding client has no clue what equipment is good or bad. The main thing is hire a professional with lots of experience and with a good reputation… the quality of the gear will most likely be good. The “what music do specialize in” question and basing your selection of DJ by that is a double edged sword since if you play too much of one genre it could lead to a lopsided musical selection where many early that don’t hear the music they like… just a few thoughts- BTW I have been DJing events for over 20 years.

The most important question of them all: Do you have liability insurance and if so, how much? I will say that having a contract is near the top of the list with me, but having insurance is higher. I have been in business for 18 years and have been a DJ for 28 years (since I was 15) and having insurance has gotten me more events than I can remember and has put me in good standing with many of the venues and other vendors here in my area. There are a couple of venues that will recommend me first…..not only because of me being an awesome DJ, but because I have insurance so if anything happens (if it is my fault), things will be fixed. Good luck!
