I used this advice for my best many speech in June.. ended up being exactly 10 mins stand up and down time and it worked to a tee, absolute perfection.. telling a greater story line from start to finish with a few funny parts to each mini story is much better than tryin to nail funny stories wlth punchlines

Doing one in a couple months and just started writing. I hate all the constant thanking and toasting and copy paste jokes when I go to a wedding, so couldn’t agree more with what you said. Also a great way to cut down on time and keep the audience engaged.

How about a 60 second speech

Guys if you’re not confident about being funny don’t worry about it. NO ONE IS THERE TOO LISTEN TO YOU. Just work on the other aspects and if you want you can throw in simple jokes that weave into the story well

Helpful video.
Yes, short chronological story how you met them to present days

Top Tip:
Exaggerate…..(if it’s funny)
Make stuff up (if it’s funny)
Embarrass (if it is funny)

I smashed it, despite weeks of pretty much making myself unwell with worry.

I could definitely have done better and I’m annoyed that I messed a few bits up but I think that I set a very high bar for myself, so not quite clearing it wasn’t the end of the world.

I feel like to most guests, it was probably a solid 7/8 out of 10 but it felt more like a 5/6 to me.

I didn’t buy into everything in this video, but one big thing I did take was to cut out a whole load of stuff that was just about me knowing the groom and living with him for years. It wasn’t funny and it wasn’t heartwarming, it was just fluff, so a couple of days before, it all got hacked out of the speech.

If you’re writing a speech and anxious about it, if you take one thing from this video and this comment, let it be that. If something isn’t funny, isn’t nice or isn’t an essential part of the set up to something funny or nice, get it out.

Dude, watched this video 1 week prior to the wedding, still thought I had no chance at getting through it. Ended up completely killing it with a standing ovation 😂 this video is a must for every best man

I appreciate your help but the fact you say you have to be funny and entertain everyone doesn't help. Especially for the introverts among us. Making people laugh isn't a guarantee and does nothing but adds pressure…

3 days before the wedding I found this video. Couldn’t have had the success I did without this man. Dread and nerves turned into confidence and charisma. Thank you!

I think the whole idea of the best man speech mainly being funny is also a bit out dated – I'm not the type to crack jokes so trying to make my best man speech funny isn't going to work.

I used this advice in my best man speech last week – absolutely nailed it, although I tried to make it more heartwarming with one or 2 funny stories/examples (not so much comedy)
To add to this video – it does not in any way have to be laugh out loud all the way through and although he is right people don’t wanna hear the same stuff 1000 times, they’re still all there on good vibes so they’ll be smiling and laughing along if you get it right! Defo practice in front of others but bring the speech on cards/paper

Some of this is good but you may be talking to people who are not comedians in any capacity so to just say the whole purpose of a best man speech is to make people laugh I think it bad advice. You need to stay true to yourself and just put the groom in a positive light. The reality is these speech’s are just something you have to get through whether you’re the speaker or the listener. It’s just a part of the wedding so even if it’s not funny as long as the groom is left in a positive light that’s good.

Completely disagree :/ The best man isn't there to entertain anyone. Be impactful… Actually talk about your feelings about the groom, and the groom and bride.

I just want to say a big thank you for this video. I did my best man speech this weekend just gone and this advice helped me nail it.

What I had written before I saw this video was good, but I focused too much on two stories which just went on for too long. After seeing this I re-wrote it to just flow through as one long story with lots of little jokes and often references back to previous parts to build on them. I didn’t use any cookie cutter jokes and just had some fun with it, using a few untruths to bring it altogether and make it even funnier. It took about 8 minutes and that seemed about spot on.

Afterwards I had a lot of people come up to me to say how good it was and I’d got it perfect. I felt like I was on cloud 9 the rest of the night as it was something I’d been terrified of doing for months.

If you’re about to do a best man speech follow this advice and you’ll be fine!

Writing a speech for the wedding tomorrow. Only problem is I don’t know the guy. This’ll be fun.

1:01 "the best way to write a wedding speech is to make the whole thing a story." – This is the kind of big picture advice I came looking for. I've got a couple months to figure this out… 🤷‍♂️
