This happened about 20 years ago. Couple asked if we could drop our pricing about $200 because they were broke. We want to help them so we cut the price. At the end of the night I found out they spent 6K on booze. Sure changed my mind about giving discounts!

You should do a video just on planners. It's gotten so bad with new planners.

I agree so much on discount point and exposure. Most of my events on non weddings, so sometimes clients down play the dj services I provide. Needless to say I send them my quote and keep it moving. The clients that believe in my services don't question my quotes, these are the people I want to work with.

Point #3 – Asking for discounts right away. Then there's the "Will you work with me on your price if I pay you in CA$H ?"

On occasion, a red flag is also their choice of venue…
I love your “red flag” list. Thanks for sharing.

The Spotify playlist is becoming an issue lately. Also some songs are not downloadable as MP3’s on other sites such as iTunes – amazon music or even beat-source.

Great video! I’ve had brides ask me to you please work with me and lower your rate $200.00 a couple of times. I caved in and did it because I was afraid of losing the event but now ever since I’ve been watching your videos I stick to my rate.

Now a useful comment… about playlists… I ask couples for a short list of songs that, if they were not played, would be an unforgivable sin, would ruin their special day. I will typically get a list of 10-15 songs (& not all for open dancing!) that I build my playlists around (my use of playlist in this context is equivalent to your crate…)… This seems to work fine since their choices will suggest genres, other songs, and so on…

Also… I find a “Do Not Play” list critical. I ask for it as an email to show to people making requests…

Funny story: did a wedding years ago and at one meeting the bride looks me in the eye and says “if you play the Hokey Pokey or that godawful Chicken Dance, you won’t get paid!” Yes, mam, understood! At the event, a little girl asks for them. “I’m sorry hon but I can’t play those. Sorry.” Over comes Mom. “Why the hell are not going to play the songs?!” I show her the email. She turns around and goes over to the bride. The bride comes over and asks why I’m not playing them. I show her the email. (She is blitzed…) “The hell with that, play ‘em!!” And she drunkenly chicken danced with the kids.

…and this reinforces your point about having a human DJ directing the show… her “magic playlist” would not have had either song on it…

What if someone who is putting on a festival for example and asks you to play at that event for free and exposure, would you do the event? If not why?
