Why does the couple pay for the wedding ?
It's a family affair, where all members come together and decide, who does what and who pays for what.
It's a good idea to ask every guest to provide some food and add to the entertainment.The parents of the couple pay for the dress, the flowers and the photographer.
What the couple pays is the rent for the location and the honey moon vacation, if there's one.

That is insane. Why is Dave not saying it's insane? Why would you spend so much money on just one night? I get that it's special, but that could be a down payment for a property somewhere…
We got married for less than $5000 total for everything.

Best wedding I evet went to was budget. Cheese n wine self serve under the trees in an orchard. Cake n coffee in the foyer. We sat on straw bales in the moonlight and listened to an excellent DJ the nicest friendliest wedding ever we chatted into the night we will never forget
Wedding celebrations are over rated! Go to a court and get some papers signed and save that money for your future retirement!

40K for a wedding is completely ridiculous. You will still be married if you don't spend this nauseating amount of money. Grow up. This woman sounds like an insatiable, airheaded princess and it is going to be a tough marriage.
Dave: "you need to pay cash for you're wedding BEFORE you pay down your loans". NO, you don't spend $40,000 on a party when you are in debt. He has consumer debt and she has student loan debt. Dave never bothered to ask how much they were in the hole, if they owned or rented, or if the owned how much s left on the mortgage. You know her student loans are massive.
