Photographing a Wedding Reception | Behind the Scenes

Today I’m sharing behind the scenes of a real wedding reception including how I photograph reception tables, table decor, the first dance, and the cake cutting! I share flash settings as well as where I position my OCF in a reception space. Enjoy!

Your OCF is still so bright, it seems, even at 16. What about 32, at least to capture the natural textures of the room?

Q: I familiar with all shooting modes M,A,S and P. But for a wedding, not sure which mode is more efficient ? And whether auto ISO would be a good option ?

Hi, I really enjoyed your video which was interesting and informative, which has now prompted me to ask for some advice, hope you don’t mind. I have been asked to photograph a friend's wedding in late August. The reception is in a long room that is quite narrow and very unevenly lit, with not as much natural light as I would like. The walls are a creamy colour and the ceiling is quite low with old dark beams. I am anticipating using 2 off camera flashes (in set positions, one at each end of the room) triggered by the mounted flash on the camera.

The two off camera flashes I will set to manual but would you ever use AUTO ISO on the camera, for the speedlight mounted on the camera if the light was so different from one end of the room to the other?

Can we take a moment to appreciate little man at 3:00 in the bottom right looking like a confident oil baron from the late 1800s. The swagger… Is just incalculable.

This video was amazing, thanks a lot, it has a lot of good information about reception with flash. Question, both flash are the same FlashPoint like the model or you use two different ones?

What do you mean by OCF? Okay now i know what it means (Off Camera Flash) question, why is that that you have an OCF but also a flash on the camera? Never mind now I know why, that's wonderful, I will need to buy another flash.

How do you balance the flash and keep it from killing the ambient vibe? Would raising the ISO and using a prime help? Receptions halls are the most intimidating for me

Hi Joy! Are you flashes all battery (AA or AAA) operated? If yes how often do you change your batteries?

thank you for sharing! Do you have trouble focusing on people with a dark reception room like that? because I do and it's really frustrating, any tips would help! 🙂

hey love the video. What angle did you point the OCF in? for example, was it pointing upward or out in the crowd?

Thanks so much for sharing how you use OCF! Loved seeing the behind the scenes for sure. Question: I saw two OCF, do you and your second shooter shoot separate or synced up together?

Who on Earth thought this was a thumbs down?!? They clearly don't know how much incredible information is packed in this video. One of my favorites because I need at the help I can get with flash!!!

Loved the video! Lots of info, thank you Joy! Tell me one thing tho: do you edit out the flash flare in the photos when your OCF shows?

@pgtips4240 21 October 2024 - 3:16 am

Can I ask do you use TTL to set flash exposure or do you just calibrate a setting for each environment and stick to it?

Reply
@PGF1953 21 October 2024 - 3:16 am

Loved this because from the looks of the room and then what the actual photo came out looking like, I certainly see the difference between what I've shot before and what you ended up getting! SO not what I manage to get! I haven't done the OFC in most of my shoots so I'm really going to work on this in 2020. The only thing I'm seeing is the shadows on people's faces behind the flashes, so is this just something you're going to have no matter what you do? I guess I'm thinking that it was something I should avoid? Just curious, because this was a dark reception for sure!!

Could you make a video on how to use flash in very dark settings?

Reply
@bdmac100 21 October 2024 - 3:16 am

I could not see where the off-camera flash was while you were shooting. Did you need to compensate for the wood colors in Ps for the off-camera flash where they were dancing? Have you tried a diffuser angled at 60 degrees instead of a flashcard?

Thank you!! I have a million questions but I'll stick to a few! Do you edit your second shooter out of those photos where she was in the background?? Also – where do you get your stand for the OCF? I was considering purchasing Godox flashes soon

Super helpful video Joy! I would give the world to just follow you on your camera, or on an attached go pro, so we could hear and see how you handle all these situations, and then coming back through and listening to you teach and commentate on the why's and how's. I know you've got a lot going on, so this may not even be possible, but it would sure be helpful! Excellent video here – learned a lot form it. THANK YOU!

Hi Joy. I stumbled on your channel and I'm really liking the content so far! I'd love to see a few more videos on editting photos to get that beautiful, rich, wedding photography look, but for photos that are rather bland or have harsher colours/lighting conditions.

Thanks so much! Keep up the fantastic work!
