I’m a third yr sped Para and always had younger ones. Like k-3 from autistic but mostly Down syndrome. This yr my sweet baby went to a different district and now stuck with fifth and sixth graders. Man. Worse than little ones. I get stuck a lot watching a classroom if teachers leave early or have some errands in the building. After ten minutes in seems I loose control. About 6 behavoir problems also. But these are great tips. Also I just started a month ago so hopefully I can use some of these ideas. Thanks. It’s hard not to yell at know it all sixth graders. Haha

So I haven’t watched this entire video yet but I’m stuck on just the first tip. I work in a district where we have students who do not listen to teachers. If they are assigned a seat they do not want they will absolutely refuse to sit in that seat. They will argue and refuse. I want to manage the class but what do you do when there is no respect for teachers to begin with?

I am a new substitute and have done 10 assignments or less. The first one I ever did was when I figured out I needed a plan. Finding this video was a life changer for me! The 'NOISE' strategy is my go-to and has worked 90% of the time! All of my age groups have loved it, thank you.

2024 and I’m still watching this! Just started as a leadership teacher at the local high school. And I caught myself in a couple power struggles not realizing the overall impact that has on the entire classroom. Thank you for educating me on that

I just did my first week and this last day this Friday was so exhausting for one class- I have one student who acts up for attention and riles up the rest of the class- I feel like it’s already too late to change anything even though it’s just been three days

"Sit where ever you want, because students are more motivated when they have more autonomy". No. No. No. That is not the case. I hate how people keep misquoting Ryan and Deci. Autonomy is not being able to make your own decisions. As Ryan has clarified numerous times: "Autonomy? To me it means a student's willingness, the will, to work for school.
It is bad for their development and for their educational performance to force students to be independent. Too much indulgence in a classroom is also harmful. Giving autonomy does not mean that you just let students do whatever they want. The best teacher supports autonomy and offers structure."

I am a sub at a K-8 charter school. The kids are very trained. I have 4 son's and worked EC, so I am successful with the kids with shenanigans. I give them eye contact, reinforce good behavior… What do I do with the teacher's pets? They want to put kid's names on the board, tell me how to teach, what the teacher does, actually rearrange their desk, go into prize boxes… I tell them it is not my desk or theirs and we will respect it, ask them to take a seat, I am considering writing their name on the board?

Im returning to the classroom after 4 years off and this is such a helpful refresher. I was so worried. I’m teaching 5th grade…so stinky. I’ve got an air filter and a diffuser and I’m ready for business 😂🤣

what happens if the students don't notice the teacher coming into the classroom? They were very busy talking friends, playing rock paper scissors, and they had their own work.some one writes the other subjects notes

I guess my issue is kids who just refuse to follow directions. I was a sub when I first tried high school, so that might have made my situation harder. But I had a student who just refused to go into the hall. The response was "you can't make me".

I cried in high school because a of a teacher. He had told us to answer like 5 questions in a powerpoint slide and discuss with our seatmates. Then teacher was trying to catch everyone's attention and instead of going "Hey, we are moving on" or an attention catch, he picked on me for talking to my seatmate about the questions which he told us to discuss. He made me change seats in front of the whole class and sent me outside when I accidentally banged my knee on the desk and said "ow." I was really distressed because I didn't want to miss any of the instruction. I still have no idea what I did wrong as an Adult

These are GREAT! I taught first grade for 5 years, and never struggled with classroom management. I became a stay at home mom for the last 5 years after having my kids. I am now subbing and when I sub upper grade / junior high I notice my classroom management with the littles doesn’t translate with older kids (obviously). I love these tips, I am going to try using NOISE today. Thank you so much!
