Looking for suggestions please. I’m terrible at picking out dresses, and am very casual. Have a wedding in south Carson January. They said black tie optional. My husband will wear a black suit, but I’m at a loss of what to wear. I’m about 5 2 and yep have to loose weight so I wear about a large. Don’t want to be super over dressed and want to be comfy.

After watching this video I went online and bought the pink sleeveless dress from Nordstrom… wore it last saturday for a wedding outdoors in Idaho… oh my gosh, I got so many compliments! It was perfect and so pretty… I’m 65 and it looked absolutely fine with a light pink sweater for when the sun went down.. I absolutely love this dress!!
We went on a cruise last year and I needed two formal dresses. I got both of them on Amazon, neither was expensive and they were plenty nice enough. We live on an island and rarely wear anything formal so I wasn’t interested in spending too much money. Anyway, I was comfortable and felt dressed comparably to the other women, not a lot sparkle but very nice nevertheless. I’m like you though I did get a little stupid with the shoes and purses!! Oh well

I love literally every single dress you've shown! And I do have a question. What does it mean to "dress to not outshine the bride"? I'm Brazilian and I had never heard of that until I moved to the US. In my mind, it isn't possible to outshine a bride on her wedding day. It is HER wedding day and all eyes will be on her regardless of what any guest might be wearing. In my mind, as long as guests stick to wearing something appropriate for the type of wedding and what it calls for (black tie, beach casual, etc…), they can, and should, dress as beautifully as they possibly can. Oh, and as long as they stay away from wearing white, of course. But if following those two rules, what can one do that would be perceived as trying to outshine the bride? I genuinely want to know, because when I ask people, I get all sorts of weird and different answers like "stick to dark or neutral colors" and "dress down and try not to look too pretty".

I have the navy Banana Factory dress (I went with petite because I was concerned about where the rouching would fall. I'm 5'4" and that was the right choice – exchange if you can!), and I cannot wait to wear it to a wedding in April and our cruise in June!

Marnie I love these dresses and you always accessorize perfectly! A word about Eliza J dresses: they are for short-waisted ladies, similar to the Anthropologie Somerset dress. They are lovely but I can’t wear either because I am long waisted.

Marnie, how should I dress for a beach wedding (ceremony) with an indoor reception, that I feel will be pretty formal? For instance, MOB is wearing black floor length all over sparkly gown; bridesmaids in gold satin dresses. The bride is my daughter's SIL and my husband has been asked to be the officiant, so I know I will be included in some of the photos and don't want to look underdressed. Help!
