Wedding Photography: How to Use Flash for Reception Dancing Photos

Let’s talking about using flash at a wedding reception! In this video, I go over my standard setup for getting open dance floor dancing shots. This is a little different from your first dance or parent dances and even the speeches. This is just raw pure wedding reception fun! If you have any…

Not sure if youll see this, or if anybody could help me out.

But he said he was shooting at 1/30? shouldn't the subjects be a bit blurry at that point? Also, how does youe lends focus in such low light. Is that because he raised his ISO?

What flash do you recommend? for Just a basic group photo outside?

I shoot at 3.5 aperture and 1600 iso and I adjust accordingly on flash power using manual mode

do you use any of the corrective gels when using the magsphere for wedding photography? Or do you shoot with AWB and the flash?

I have a question in these dark rooms what white balance should you use or should in kelvin.

thanks for the video! do you think a v350/tt350 would have enough power for small weddings (25-50 guests)?

Hi, John. Just to be clear; you set your iso manually, you're full open at 2.8. Did you set to aperture priority, and shutter speed moves accordingly, because I dont hear you talk about shutter speed, or did you sync it with flash?

Do you shoot these images with your flash in Manual or TTL mode?
Thank you!

Hi John. I really love the helpful videos you create. Hey, I just ordered the Magmod2 and I was wondering, can I use it with my flash set on TTL mode and my camera in Aperture Priority mode?

this might sound really stupid but do you just go above everyone and take pictures on the dance floor? is there any pose you look for?

@johnanthonycolley3803 7 October 2024 - 10:28 pm

Agreed ( how we shot differently )

Using Minolta Glass
( because I just love their colour rendition )

I prefer to shoot well back
( 75mm focal length,
aperture wide open, occasionally down to F4 ish
Shutter 1/200S no flash )

My style is to pluck out individual subjects or couples..

( Similarly to " Street " )
I'm watching for the moment during which it is possible to create a portrait within an environment of chaos ..

Kit:
Sony Crop sensor DLSR, or SLT
Mounted with a Minolta 50mm F1.4
Wider 28mm in pocket
( nothing too valuable ) 😊

Because it's easier to predict movements
this style of shooting is better suited to formal dancing ( Country/ Ballroom/ Rock n Roll, etc )
Than ad-hoc ( freestyle)

As in " Street " where motions & patterns of movement can be more predictable when confined to a passage / corridor, etc .

Success is all about carefully selecting your vantage point, and moment 🙃

Thanks John for this video. I always feel inspired after watching your channel. I have a question about shooting large family groupings of 20-30 people at a reception with flash – Depending on the number of rows what does your f-stop usually stay around? If there were 2-3 rows would you be on f 5.6 or higher with flash? Or would you keep your flash wide open? Thanks!

John, awesome video and advice. What is the best way to capture motion with flash at a wedding? Do you shoot high speed flash synch or let the flash freeze the action a the synch speed of the camera (typically 1/200 or 1/250). You seem to suggest using a higher speed but you can only override camera synch speed in high speed flash synch settings and the lowers the power of the flash and causes you to raise ISO.

Question – what do you have your f stop number set to for bigger settings like this? And how do you get everyone's faces in focus without having to look through the view finder to know?

Quick question! I just set up my Godox V1 and Magmod, and I’m having some trouble. My first wedding is this weekend, so I’m kind of freaking out 😂 I can’t seem to adjust my shutter speed beyond 200, and my camera is not focusing on anything. I’m super worried this is going to happen at the wedding, so I would like to nip it in the bud. If you have any advice, or pointers, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you so much!

John, do you ever set up stands with constants lighting at various corners of the reception room? If so, what lights do you actually use? I'm looking for company names and models. Thanks, man!

i still can’t comprehend the settings. when not using flash my photos look exactly as they do on screen before i take the photo. but with flash i am so confused always. i never know what settings. because it’s all dark 😂it feels like another world! during the day i can instantly see if my setting isn’t working and i adjust it to my liking but with flash i feel like it’s so hard 😭

hey John,
What do you do when a couple or some random people want a picture of themselves while you have the wide+flash set up ?
I find the 23/16 too wide for it and I really dont want to carry another body with a flash
Thanks
